Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher is a portable apparatus designed to extinguish a small fire by directing a substance onto it. This substance cools the burning material, deprives the flame of oxygen, or interferes with the chemical reactions occurring in the flame. Fire extinguishers are classified based on their contents, and there are also classifications based on the types of fires they can be used on. This results in five different categories, depending on the agent that fuels the fires:

  • Green:For wood, cloth, and paper.
  • Red: For combustible and flammable liquids such as oil, gasoline, and paint.
  • Blue: For electrical equipment and tools.
  • Orange/Cream: For flammable metals.
  • Black: For animal or vegetable oils or cooking fats.
